The foundational tonal tool

Levels remaps the input range. Move the black point up and everything darker becomes black; move the white point down and everything brighter becomes white; the gamma handle sets the midtones between them.

It works per channel as well, so the same control can correct a colour cast. It costs almost nothing to run, which is why it sits near the top of most stacks.
