What it does

The effect scans the whole image for its brightest and darkest values, then stretches every pixel so those values reach the ends of the range. A flat, grey image comes out with real blacks and whites.

It is a starting point, not a grade. Use it to get a clean base, then adjust with Levels or Curves to decide where the tones should sit.
