How the curve behaves

Gamma is a power curve. Below 1 it darkens the midtones, above 1 it lifts them. Black stays black and white stays white, so this is the control to reach for when the picture is right at the ends but feels too dark or too bright in the middle.

It can run per channel, which is how you shift the colour balance of the midtones without touching the rest of the image.
