Marks made by a machine

The effect follows a toolpath, the route a plotter pen would take. Line density follows the tone, so dark areas take more marks than light ones, and the direction of the marks can follow the gradients in the image.

Seven ways to draw

Hatch fills tone with parallel strokes. Flow lets the marks follow the picture's direction. Contour traces the lines between tonal levels. Circuit draws right-angled paths like a printed board. Weave interlaces the strokes over and under each other. Stream runs the marks as continuous lines across the frame. Engrave cuts banknote line plates whose lines are bent by the depth map, not the brightness, so they climb over the form while the tone sets how thick each line is; Plate, Cross and Spiral choose the cut.
