Finding the lines

An edge is where the picture changes sharply from one pixel to the next. The effect finds those changes and draws them as lines, which gives a line-art or drawn look without any hand-tracing.

Three detectors

Sobel is the smooth, general-purpose choice. Roberts is sharper and picks up more fine, sometimes broken, detail. Laplacian reacts to the very fine change in the picture, giving an etched look.
