An image heard as a waveform

The picture is read row by row into a single line of samples, as if it were a sound. Audio effects such as echo and amplification then act on those samples, and the picture comes back as the waveform they produce.

The wrap

Amplifying a waveform past its limit makes it wrap around rather than clip, and that wrap is what tears the image into bands. It is the most direct way to hear what the picture is made of.
