Three ways to sharpen

Unsharp is the classic method: subtract a blurred copy from the image and add the difference back, scaled. It is the one to reach for when edges need a clean, familiar lift.

Clarity works on the midtones. It adds local contrast where the picture is mid-grey, so texture and surfaces read more strongly without the halo that a hard edge sharpen can leave.

High Pass isolates the fine detail as its own layer and blends it back over the image. It is the most controllable, because you can see exactly what is being added.

Keeping flat areas clean

Sharpening amplifies anything that changes from pixel to pixel, including noise. The threshold stops the effect acting on smooth regions, so a sky stays a sky while the edges of a face come up.
