Lines across the picture

Scanlines lay a fine raster of dark lines across the image, modulated by the depth map so the lines follow the surface. An optional vignette adds the darkened edge of an old tube.

Four kinds of line

Classic is the plain even raster. CRT Mask adds the phosphor pattern of the tube itself, with a choice of Aperture Grille or Slot Mask. Interlace is the alternating field of a broadcast picture. Scan Bar is a single rolling bar, the look of a tape head catching up.

  • Film GrainFilm grain that responds to tone the way emulsion does — peaking in the midtones, on named stocks from Tri-X and HP5 to Portra, Velvia and Cinestill 500T, plus digital sensor noise.
  • VignetteDarken the frame edges, or tint them, following the shape of the frame.
  • HalftoneA real halftone screen — an angled grid of cells whose ink coverage tracks tone, in dot, line, cross or square, with a separate four-colour process screen for CMYK.
