Grain is not noise, and the difference is the response curve

Add uniform noise across a frame and it reads as digital, immediately, even to people who couldn’t tell you why. The reason is that film grain isn’t uniform. Grain is silver halide crystals developing, and in a region that received almost no light almost nothing develops, while in a region that was thoroughly overexposed nearly everything did. Both extremes are quiet. The visible grain lives in the middle, where the outcome was genuinely uncertain.

V3KTR’s grain follows that shape — strongest at mid-grey and falling to nothing at both ends of the range. It is a small thing and it is the entire difference between grain that sits in the picture and noise that sits on top of it. It is also why grain looks wrong when it’s applied to an already-crushed image: there are no midtones left for it to live in.

The stocks, and what they’re each known for

Black and white: Tri-X 400 is the reportage stock, with grain coarse enough to be part of the image’s character rather than a texture over it. HP5 400 is its gentler contemporary — similar speed, softer contrast, finer structure. Delta 3200 is the extreme: a stock designed to be pushed, where grain is large, obvious, and the reason you chose it.

Colour negative: Portra 400 and 800 are the portrait stocks — fine grain, restrained contrast, and the skin rendering that made them the default for a generation of photographers. Superia 400 and Gold 200 are the consumer films, warmer and more saturated, with the specific look of a photograph that came back from a chemist rather than a lab.

Slide: Ektachrome is the cooler, cleaner transparency stock. Velvia 50 is the loud one — at ISO 50 its grain is almost absent, so what you are actually reaching for is its reputation for colour, and this mode gives you the structure that belongs with it. Cinestill 500T is a tungsten-balanced motion-picture stock respooled for stills without its anti-halation backing, which is where its reputation for red glow around bright lights comes from.

Alongside those: Digital models sensor noise instead of emulsion — finer, more even, and correctly less tonally selective. Dust & Scratches is the other kind of age entirely: physical damage to the print rather than structure in the negative.

Where it goes in the stack

Last, almost always. Grain is the final physical layer between the image and the viewer, so anything applied after it — a blur, a bloom, a resize — is operating on the grain rather than on the picture, and will quietly destroy the thing you added.

The exception is deliberate: put grain BEFORE a dither or a halftone and the grain gets quantised along with everything else, which breaks up the banding those effects produce. That is a real technique, not a mistake — but it is the only reason to do it.

When you’d reach for it

When an image is too clean to be believed. Grain is the cheapest way to move a render from “generated” to “photographed”, and the stock you pick carries a whole set of associations — reportage, portrait, holiday snapshot, night exterior — that the grain structure alone will suggest before any colour work does.
