Shimmer with distance

Heat distorts the view more the further away it is. The effect bends the picture in step with the depth map, so the near things stay steady and the far things waver.

Three kinds of air

Shimmer is the everyday wobble over a hot road. Mirage bends the far ground, as the air does over a desert. Fata Morgana stacks the bent layers, the rare, layered mirage seen over water.
