A push in three dimensions

A zoom in a flat image enlarges everything by the same amount. Here the depth map drives the movement, so the nearest parts grow fastest and the distance barely shifts. It reads as the camera travelling into the scene.

The edge

As the image moves, its edges come into view. Clamp repeats the outermost pixels there. Mirror reflects the image back in, which keeps the edge looking like part of the picture.

  • Depth ParallaxShift the viewpoint in 3D by displacing every pixel according to its depth — near things move further than far ones — with disocclusions filled by stretch or from the background.
  • Depth FogFog that thickens with distance, so the far end of the picture dissolves into it.
  • Point CloudEvery pixel lifted into real 3D space by inferred depth and rendered as billboarded splats with true depth-buffer occlusion — six displacement fields, four materials, three environments, and a field channel another effect can drive.
